Bumpin'... 37 Weeks: Underwater Pregnancy on Film

In our 37th week together, I finished full-time work and spent the first couple of days adjusting to a new routine. The nesting urge was the strongest during this week. Together with B, we painted the deck, balcony and outdoor furniture with oil (I'm now stained with blotches and streaks of said oil on my arms and legs), mowed the lawns, trimmed the edges, repotted our seedlings and scrubbed, cleaned, soaked, washed, dusted, vacuumed and prepared for your arrival.

Week 37 is the busiest week of this pregnancy thus far and in addition to the manic nesting, we continued to exercise daily on the beach with Coco and B (when he wasn't working). All of this effort made for aching bodies and so to relax we ventured to the local pool to unwind.

+++

The morning of our swim the sun shone bright in a cloudless blue sky. I managed to squeeze into an old bikini before wrapping myself in a cocoon of thick knitwear, soft scarf, jeans, cushioned socks, and boots.

As we pulled into the carpark at the pool, the wind whipped up in a powerful gust, sending dried leaves and a discarded paper coffee cup dancing across the bitumen. The chilly air stung our faces as we hurried to the front desk to pay our entry fees.

On entering the pool area, screams of laughter and the sound of splashing water echoed from the indoor heated pool. Children could be seen running around the wet corners of the pool as the more serious lap swimmers dodged water bombs and lost noodles from the hydrotherapy class. The indoor pool area was packed to the brim with loud noise, colours and whistle blowing.

The outdoor pool offered a more serene experience. Not a single soul, granted it wasn't heated and at a chilly 16 degrees Celsius, presented a rather different challenge- Overcoming the cold water.

The on duty lifeguard thought we were joking or confused and stated that the water was too cold to swim in without a wetsuit. He offered one of those puzzled gazes with one eyebrow arched high when I calmly told him that I would be taking a dip in the outdoor pool. He smiled before walking away, shaking his head.

I'm not going to lie to you, the initial shock of the water took my breath away as I gently lowered myself using the silver ladder. Byron offered to swim with me however, his eyes betrayed his faux-enthusiasm and so I asked if he would mind taking photographs under water by submerging his hands and forearms only. He reluctantly agreed as I spent the next half an hour or so floating about in the cool water, my skin somewhat numb from the low temperature.

After the initial few minutes I no longer felt the cool sting and was able to glide and float in peace, feeling calm and blissfully happy to feel weightless with my now full term baby inside my large, round bump. The downward pressure from gravity on dry land was no longer an issue and it felt wonderful (to any expectant mamas, I strongly recommend swimming as often as you can, particularly during your third trimester).

I even managed to jump into the deep water several times, the hiss of the thousands of tiny bubbles racing to the surface tickled my skin as I pushed off the bottom of the blue pool, eyes slightly open to watch the moving disfigured image of Byron above the surface.

It wasn't long before he suggested I take a warm shower. After some weak protests on my behalf, I agreed and hauled my energised body out of the pool, dripping all the way to the showers, past the smiling lifeguard.

'Bit cool in the wind?' he quizzed me as I tip-toed passed him.

'Just a little bit.'

Dear Pecan,

You're now full term and although you could come at any time, I want you to know that you are welcome to stay warm tucked inside until you're ready. I will miss your gentle nudges but am looking forward to the day you join us in the sunshine.

Love always,

Your Mama

Bumpin'... 36 Weeks and Hope

We're getting closer little Pecan. Closer to the day we will meet you and we're full of hope that your journey will be a safe one.

You're most active during the night time... A sign of things to come perhaps? You enjoy being rocked in my belly, I imagine you sleeping as my body sways from side to side during my late morning 'waddle' along the golden shores of the beach.

This week we made a new friend, Sarah. Sarah is four and friendly, oh so friendly. She loves our dog because Coco plays with her dog, Bailey. Sarah also likes to hold my hand and race us back to her parents. I don't need to let her win because she's fast, much faster than a 36 weeks pregnant woman.

Sarah enjoys talking about her playgroup, the movie Frozen and her little brother, Jimmy.

It's surprising to think I will be full term by the end of this week. At times I feel like I have been pregnant for what feels like forever. I struggle to remember what it feels like to not have this swollen belly. My legs and arms are larger, my loose jeans are now a snug fit and my hair is thicker and healthier than it has ever been.

I'm aware that you still have some time to develop little Pecan and could continue your water journey for another five weeks. We're ready for you whenever you choose to join us.

Bumpin'... 34 Weeks with New Friends

One sunny morning during my 34th week of pregnancy as I collected the newspaper from our front lawn, I met Hal. Hal's an elderly man who lives around the corner. He walks a young, playful two year old black Labrador named Mindy. She's about as sweet as Labs come, with a gentle nature and flapping tail. Hal asked how long we had to wait until we meet little Pecan and was surprised when I answered, just over five weeks. He laughed and said, 'Are you sure you haven't got two in there?'.

It was wonderful to hear those words as I had been a little concerned in previous weeks that Pecan may be on the small side. I needn't have felt so concerned as this baby is growing as expected and I've begun to fill out more myself (hello breasts!). My favourite torn jeans feel tighter around my legs than last week and I'll soon need to fold them away in favour of stretchy yoga pants. I love being pregnant in the cooler months.

The rest of the day was spent washing Pecan's cloth nappies in preparation for his/ her arrival. Next week we'll wash all of the baby clothes as I continue to brainstorm items to stockpile for birthing.

I can really feel this nesting urge to prepare, scrub, polish and purge my life of unwanted or unneeded clutter. I'm also cooking more too, if only my energy would last beyond 7pm...

Bumpin'... Week 26 in Tasmania

Speeding through second trimester. How did we reach 26 weeks so quickly? I've noticed that people often stare at my belly before making eye contact and smiling. It fills my heart with joy the fact that I can connect with strangers in a glance and feel the warmth and kindness of others through this round little being growing inside of me.

This week we've been in Hobart, a beautiful city, glowing with the glorious warm hues of my favourite season. Deciduous trees burst with vibrant orange, crimson and sunny yellow leaves. The green city parks are speckled with the rustling, golden carpet of a million fallen leaves.

The sea breeze makes music in the trees as more leaves flutter gently to the soft earth. We explore the city on foot in the early hours of the morning. Pecan is snug in my belly, covered with numerous layers to protect us from the chilly pre-winter air. I wear a soft poncho, handmade in Bolivia from alpaca wool and Byron wears a dark knitted woollen jumper and scarf.

Our boots make sloshy noises in the softer grassy areas after the recent rain. Everything is different here.

Tiny pine cones sit proudly beneath giant trees, sunlight dances through the foliage of gorgeous pines and the air- Oh the air! It's a mixture of the sea and mountains. It's crisp and refreshing. It's clean and rejuvenating.

This week we dined on freshly caught grilled blue trevalla, locally grown vegetables, both steamed and roasted, mussels in brown butter sauce and roasted duck on sweet red cabbage. Our stay in Hobart wouldn't be complete without a visit to Jackman and McRoss gourmet bakery cafe where we dined on freshly squeezed orange juice, almond croissants and a gluten free clay pot filled with sizzling spicy chorizo, buttery wilted spinach, softly poached organic eggs, tomato and blackbean ragout and warm polenta cakes stuffed with plump green olives.

The Tasmanian Leatherwood honey is fragrant, liquid gold on my tongue. The apples are crunchy and sweeter than I've ever tasted before. We are spoiled for choice for every meal and find ourselves devouring fruit and tasting plates between long, hilly walks around this fair part of our beautiful country.

We could live here we say to ourselves. And we mean it.

Bumpin'... Weeks 24 & 25

I think it's safe to say I've 'popped' this fortnight. Feeling the glow...

We explored the seaside markets with Coco at the weekend, the mid-way point for weeks 24 and 25 of this beautiful pregnancy. The warm autumn air hummed with the murmurs of the crowd as nearby children ran about the soft grass chasing bubbles. Barefoot. Wild hair. Laughter.

Our neighbours, Jules and Dave have a natural skincare stall and I was gifted with a bottle of aloe vera to spray on my skin after a warm shower. Jules taught me how to properly apply cocoa butter (smear a tiny amount on the palm of your hand and rub your palms together before applying to the desired area- I've been doing it wrong all these years!) after aloe vera to ensure even coverage of the butter. I have to say, it worked a treat and I spent the rest of the afternoon smelling delicious.

This was our last weekend at the seaside before our holiday to Tasmania. Coco will be staying with Dave and Jules for the week and I was having a rather difficult time adjusting to the idea that I'd be without her for such a long time. Thankfully, she didn't know we would be leaving so soon. The only other thing on my mind was that my clothes have really started to feel more snug around my belly. My comfortable black singlet felt stretched over my growing bump, which I must admit has started to look more like a pregnant mama's body and less like the bloated belly I've had in previous weeks. Every now and then I would pull the singlet down, only to expose the top of my bra. Must start to wear some of Byron's shirts...

We explored the break wall after lunch, sipped a chai tea I made at home and talked about our upcoming travel plans. Coco trotted up to every child who passed us, no doubt ecstatic to be outside in the sun with so many new smells and happy faces. These weeks I've felt more movement from Pecan, subtle little wriggles that come more frequently and remind me that Yes, I am indeed pregnant. The nausea has all but left my body and I feel more energy to walk, stand for extended periods and play with this gorgeous little dog.

Byron, honey, you certainly found me a special little friend in this tiny rescue pup.

I'm one content mama-to-be.
